'a' conversation with Haeckels

Posted on June 28, 2016 by Amelia Ebdon

Haeckels is a natural fragrance and skin care brand whose products aren’t just made in Margate, but are made of Margate. Showcasing the coasts’ natural ingredients, from seaweed to local botanicals collected along the Margate coast, Haeckels aim to remind and educate customers of the natural wealth of the coastline. Drawn to their processes and production methods, and their love of raw British materials, we shot some of their pieces with our Marine and more summery accessories – a nod to the sea and the sun.

Haeckels was started in 2012 by film maker, volunteer beach warden and coastal enthusiast Dom bridges. Disillusioned by the production ethos of many larger skin care companies, Dom wanted the products themselves to promote Margate’s heritage of healthy coastal living. In the beginning, Dom would collect ingredients from along the Margate coast and bring them back to his family kitchen to experiment with. Since then the company has grown and he has acquired the Lab on Cliff Terrace to develop product formulas, completing the Haeckels range. The company however is far from forgetting its roots, playing an active part in the local community by organising beach cleans and taking part in marine conservation surveys.

At Alice Made This we believe in championing British industry and unique manufacturing processes, choosing to work with factories that aren’t usually associated with the fashion industry. The fact then that Haeckels’ products are all hand crafted and formulated in a cliff top Lab in Margate appeals to our core foundations. Haeckels only use and distill locally grown botanicals to offer the very best anti-oxidant properties to their customers.

Holding one of only two licenses in England to harvest seaweed from the English coast, Haeckels see themselves just like any other farmer in the world. They take great pride in their license and see it as their responsibility to care for the coastline.

Margate’s coast is built on a giant 14 mile long Jurassic chalk reef which makes up 20% of the UK chalk reefs, meaning it's able to nourish families of seaweed not found anywhere else in the world. Hand harvested Seaweed forms the base ingredient of all of Haeckels’ skin care range based on the tradition of Thalassotherapy derived from the Greek word meaning ‘sea’ or ‘ocean’. Thalassotherapy treatments use ocean water, seaweed, ocean mud and marine minerals to treat ailments and enable the body to replenish, remineralise and revitalise to enhance good health for body and mind.

Formed from honest raw materials, stemming from the clean and precise formations of the Margate coast, Haeckels have formed their collection on the celebration of natural beauty.  Where Alice Made This allows you to own a piece of refined industry, Haeckels allows you to take the coastline’s natural goodness away with you in a bottle. Both highlight the remarkable processes that our country’s resources has to offer.
