I had the fortune of sitting next to Giacomo Smith on my return from Paris Mens fashion week on the Eurostar in June. A conversation started with why Stratford International was ‘International’ and ended with a twitter address exchange. Giacomo Smith is a member of the Kansas Smitty House Band, a jazz collective, formed of some of the best young jazz musicians residing in the UK.
Inspired by the swinging, hedonistic atmosphere of the one American city that overcame the Great Depression. The Kansas Smitty’s House Band are the fresh answer to London’s booming ‘speakeasy jazz’ scene and are coined with ‘putting the danger back into jazz’. Dave Archer, Giacomo Smith, Ruben Fox and Theon Cross of Kansas Smitty’s joined us for a morning of good coffee, jazz and Christmas tunes in November. We hope to get you all into the festive spirit by delivering you some snippets of Christmas jazz from the streets of East London in the lead up to Christmas.
I would highly recommend going to watch them if you can… Hot off the back of sold out shows at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex, Peckham Liberal Club & The Servants Jazz Quarters, they will be playing at The Servant Jazz Quarters on Friday 6th & 20th December and will be Kickstarting 2014 with the VAULT festival on the 31st January – we’ll definitely see you there!
